MOBILE DAIRY CLASSROOM INSTRUCTOR SOUTHLAND DAIRY FARMERS

The Mobile Dairy Classroom is part of an educational program operated by the Southland Dairy Museum, Inc. d/b/a Southland Dairy Farmers. The 32-foot classroom features a fully operational milking parlor and carries a live dairy cow to schools, fairs, and festivals throughout our funding areas. Each Mobile Dairy Classroom program includes a 30 to 45-minute presentation by a trained instructor with printed educational material and a live milking demonstration. In addition to our school educational programs, the Mobile Dairy Classroom is often a featured exhibitor in state, district, and county fairs. Instructors teach audiences:

The importance of dairy foods in a healthy diet
Modern environmental and food safety practices on a dairy farm
The modern milking process
Characteristics and anatomy of dairy cows

The Southwest Dairy Museum, Inc. presently has an opening for a Mobile Dairy Classroom Instructor for the state of North Carolina based in the Raleigh or Greensboro area. Candidates for this position must meet the following qualifications:

Be able to work independently

Be a self-starter

Possess the basic knowledge of dairy cows and the physical ability to handle dairy cows and the mobile dairy classroom unit
Ability to speak effectively in public - often to large groups comprised of elementary school students and their teachers
Enjoy working with and be able to communicate and interact effectively with elementary school children, as well as the general public
A safe driving record and the ability to handle (or learn to handle) a large gooseneck trailer with a live animal pulled by a ¾ ton company truck

The physical requirements for the Mobile Dairy Classroom Instructor are:

Loading and unloading an 800-pound dairy cow in the trailer
Driving a 36-foot-long truck and trailer

Trips could be up to 2 to 3 hours away from home base
Sometimes in large cities such as Raleigh and Charlotte
Some overnight travel is required

At the presentation, the instructor:

Picks up a 43-inch television monitor
Picks up a speaker (20-25 pounds) and sets up a public address system
Picks up a sack of feed (50 pounds) and bale of hay (50 pounds)
Stoops and bends over to milk the cow
Speak to groups of 100 or more persons for 35 to 45 minute presentations up to 4 times a day primarily in an outdoor venue

Upon return home, the instructor must clean out the trailer and maintain a neat appearance of the exterior of the truck and trailer

Our instructors are required to follow the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations and must:

Use an electronic tablet to log on and off duty
Pass a yearly DOT physical

The instructor performs daily clerical duties by computer to:

Archive daily events into the system
Record daily work time
Schedule schools and events for presentations
Answer request e-mails

This position prefers a college education, but it is not a requirement. Knowledge of computers and basic software usage is necessary. The work schedule is based on a 40-hour work week. However, the Instructor will be required to work a varied work schedule, including some weekends and holidays and, at times, starting very early and/or working into the evening. The position requires extensive travel within the state of North Carolina with occasional overnight stays. No tobacco use is allowed during business hours, as many of our venues are tobacco free.

Annual starting salary for this position is negotiable based on knowledge and experience.
