Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Brownies- By Kitchen Kimberley

Ingredients

  • For the Brownies:
  • 2 c. all‐purpose flour
  • 2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. butter
  • 1 c. water
  • 1/2 c. cocoa powder
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • For the Buttermilk Frosting:
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/2 c. cocoa powder
  • 1/3 c. buttermilk
  • 1 box powdered sugar
  • 1 c. chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • Dash of salt

Instructions

  1. Brownie Instructions:
  2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  3. In a large mixing bowl combine flour, sugar and salt; set aside.
  4. In a saucepan, combine butter, water, and cocoa; bring to a boil, then pour over the dry
  5. ingredients. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla to mixture; blend well.
  6. Pour batter into a well‐greased and floured 11 x 16‐inch jelly‐roll pan. Bake for 20
  7. minutes, and then remove from oven and frost immediately with Buttermilk Frosting.
  8. Buttermilk Frosting Instructions:
  9. In a saucepan, combine butter, cocoa, and buttermilk; bring mixture to a boil. Remove
  10. from heat, and then stir in powdered sugar, nuts, vanilla and salt.
  11. Spread frosting over warm brownies. Cool in pan on a wire rack, and then cut into bars.
